You can still remember learning how to drive in high school. You couldn’t wait to get your driver’s license since it meant that you could get from point A to point B without the watchful eyes of your parents. You might even get a vehicle from them for passing the driver’s test. The first thing you need to do, however, is to make sure you know about defensive driving. There are several facets of defensive driving that you need to be aware of for your sake along with everyone else on the road. Let’s take a deeper look at what is needed to become a defensive driver.
“What does defensive driving mean?”
Defensive driving is very easy to define and means exactly what you might think it means. Defensive driving is driving to save lives, time, and money. You drive defensively in spite of the conditions around you and the actions of other drivers on the road. There are several facets to driving defensively, which should be followed by all drivers on the road.
“What’s involved with driving defensively?”
The first step to driving defensively is to keep your attention focused solely on the road around you. The number one cause of wrecks, especially involving teenagers, is the lack of attention. You don’t want to get into a wreck because you weren’t paying attention to what’s going on around you.
Another facet of defensive driving is to watch out for other drivers. There is a distinct possibility that other drivers won’t look out for you. It is your job to make sure you don’t involve yourself in a wreck. A third facet of defensive driving is staying alert at all times. Being alert can mean the difference between getting to work on time and getting into a wreck with another driver. Don’t spend time on your phone while you’re driving since it will distract you. This is called distracted driving and can cause you a lot of problems.
A fourth facet of defensive driving is keeping your speed down. Keep your car going at the speed limit posted on the street signs you pass. These speed limits are for ideal conditions; if your run your vehicle at a faster speed, you have less of a chance of controlling it.
“What do you do after getting into a wreck?”
The first thing you should do is keep yourself calm. If your breathing is labored, take a deep breath to calm it down. You should also move your car out of the lane of traffic so you aren’t causing a traffic jam for other drivers.
You should make sure the other driver involved in the wreck is not harmed. Once you do that, you should call 9-1-1 to report the wreck. You also need to report the wreck to your insurance agency as needed. If there are injuries, you should report them while reporting your wreck as well.
Being honest with everyone involved in the wreck is the best policy to take during this stressful period. Make sure you don’t leave anything out when reporting the incident.
If you need to get a lawyer, you should get one as soon as possible. Protecting yourself and the others involved is one of the best things you can do in the long run.
